Can cannabinoids prevent and treat COVID?

Dr. Cohen breaks down the recent studies.

There have been two recent studies that we would like to address about the use of non-psychoactive cannabinoids CBD, CBDa and CBG in the potential prevention and treatment of Covid-19. I'd like to offer some context, along with my thoughts on how to put some of this new information from the recent studies that address this issue into practice for maintaining your health.

The research from Oregon State University demonstrated that two cannabinoids, CBDa and CBGa, bind to the Sars Cov 2's spike protein, "blocking a critical step in the process the virus uses to infect people." This in vitro study indicated that these two cannabinoids disabled the mechanism that the virus uses to enter cells. While this suggests that CBDa and CBGa could be used as preventatives, I would like to emphasize that this study was not performed on humans and therefore more research will be needed to make any significant claim. Until we have more information, I would recommend using our CannaKoru CBDa tincture 1/2 dropperful twice daily.

A second group of researchers at University of Chicago looked at how CBD taken orally could prevent viral replication in humans. They discovered that individuals who were taking CBD had significantly fewer infections than a comparable group of people who were not taking CBD. This was a double blind placebo controlled study that described two mechanisms of action for CBD's antiviral properties against covid:

1.) It prevents viral replication in the body, and

2.) It helps to prevent the cytokine storm that causes significant complications from this virus.

The study found that CBD taken orally has the most significant effect because it converts in the liver to a different compound 7-OH CBD, which has been found to be most effective in preventing replication of the virus.

The dose they were using in the study was 100mg of CBD. If you are going to use CBD for this purpose, I would recommend taking a 50mg CannaKoru Capsule twice daily, although it's possible that a lower dose could also be effective. We have much more to learn before we can make the claim that CBD, CBDa and CBGa treat or prevent covid, but the preliminary evidence is promising and worthy of further research.
